Perhaps sometimes the restrictions imposed by Covid-19 aren’t all bad. At one Stone Oak area youth basketball camp, young girls are getting to train with a National Basketball Player who can’t return to her overseas team due to the pandemic.

Mailee Jones, a graduate of Reagan High School and current Vietnamese Women’s National Team Player has been stuck in San Antonio since early March.

“I miss my teammates and our training routine in Vietnam a lot,” said Jones.  “But I have better access to a gym if I stay in the United States, at least for now.”

With no practice or games scheduled in the foreseeable future for the Vietnamese Women’s National Team, The 22-year-old Jones has decided to temporarily remain home and train with her father, former professional player-turned-youth trainer, David Jones.

“We are in the gym every second we get,” said Jones.

And, when she’s not training herself, the younger Jones is sharing all the knows with future ballers at her dad’s youth basketball organization, Shooting For Success.

‘It’s very cool to see the look on the kids’ faces when Mailee comes to camp wearing her Women’s National Team jersey,” David Jones said.  “The young players, especially the girls, love it.  They love Mailee.”

Mailee will talk about her experience playing overseas in Vietnam with campers Monday, July 6 at 1:30 PM. The basketball campers will have the opportunity to ask Mailee questions and watch a demonstration of her skills. They will also return home with a limited-edition T-shirt with Mailee’s photo on it.

“I have learned so much from my dad. I shoot with his signature mechanics and can share that value with up and coming players,” Mailee said.

While home in San Antonio, Mailee is also working with her father’s Middle School Girls Basketball Fundamentals program on Friday evenings, a youth program that practices on Sundays and she’s doing some private 1-on-1 training as time allows.

“We talk a lot about core values at Shooting For Success,” said David Jones. “ Mailee is a great example of putting those core values such as leadership and discipline into practice in achieving her basketball dreams.”
Mailee’s looking to help her Vietnamese Team to do well in the upcoming SEA games in order to qualify for the 2024 Olympics.

Mailee Jones has dual citizenship in both the United States and Vietnam.  She has extended family in Vietnam.  She’s been a member of the Vietnamese Women’s Team since 2019.
